The Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes opened this weekend in Toronto.

Ships are now underway racing to Fairpoint Harbor on Lake Erie in Ohio.

Hey All,

When I first heard about this event and became involved, even before the Draken left Norway, I could not help but feel that something would happen and they would not make it to Chicago. There was an issue that developed a couple weeks ago and it seemed that, that could very well be the case and we would not see them at Navy Pier at all.

See:

They are at South Haven Michigan now and have funding to make it to Chicago but continuing the voyage as planned is uncertain.

You can see here the Mackinac Bridge which connects Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan at the Straits of Mackinac where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan connect.

George,

How about a huge "Uff Da" and lets hear it Minnesota style.

Thanks
Terry

The Draken has left port in New Haven Michigan this morning and finally is on course to Chicago.
We are headed to Navy Pier now and will be there to greet the Vikings on their arrival at our shore.

I'll look for this beer when we're in Minnesota next week! Decided we're going to introduce the use of "Uff Da" to our 2-yo grand daughter, just to keep those traditions going. :)

Back on terra firma after 5 days on Navy Pier where our ACBS Blackhawk Chapter folks had an excellent outing.
Had a primo location to park Mama Mia! out on Chicago’s lake front jewel, Lake Michigan.

Tall Ships Parade of Sails

Draken arrived on schedule Wednesday afternoon was quite a sight to behold.

They broke out some the oars and rowed the last mile into the harbor. It was a real treat see and it was actually the first time they used the oars since leaving Norway.

After months of following the journey and anticipating her arrival I was thrilled to finally see the Dragon up close.

I went down to see the Draken early last Thursday morning and met Captain Bjorn and Woody and Sarah.

Erick and Christian. Christian is the ships engineer and was able to answer a question I’ve had since learning about the ship.
How is she powered? I woulda bet 10 to 1 it would be Volvo Penta, but nope, John Deere twin screws.

Karolina. She and all of the Draken crew were very extremely friendly and welcoming.

My friend Kate took some great pictures down there too.
