The Draken has reached Reykjavik Iceland.

Now moored at Skarfabbaki harbour.

A Celebration of the Vikings return to Iceland is planned for today at the Reykjavik Maritime Museum in the old harbor.

And everyone is invited so be sure to bring your drinking horn.

New video of the Shetland to Faroes Islands crossing on youtube.

Draken Harald Hårfagre in the old harbor at Reykjavik.

Very interesting video here on the construction of a Viking Dragon Ship

I have heard the term CIinker built used to describe these boats and learned here what that is.

It looks as if our Viking friends are making good headway to Greenland.

The Draken Expedition which is following Leif Erickson’s course and historic journey to North America in a Viking long ship actually was not a wholly novel idea.

In 1893 Norwegians built the 78’ ‘Viking’ and with a crew of 12 sailors took much the same route to Chicago to for the World’s Fair. The ship was moored on Lake Michigan and was a sensation for spectators at the Worlds Columbian Exposition commemorating Columbus’s discovery of America.

Scandinavians knew from the Viking Sagas written in the 14th century which were based on oral histories that Leif Erickson reached Newfoundland long before 1493. Although It wasn’t until 1960 when L’Anse Aux Meadows was first excavated and showed presence of European presence over a thousand years ago.

The Viking was a replica of a ship found buried under a mound on a farm in Norway in 1880.
The ship was as the burial chamber of a high ranking Viking Chieftain and was named Gokstad after the lands where it was discovered. The wood used to build the ship was dated to have been felled around 890.

The Viking was on display outside in Lincoln Park on Chicago’s Lake Front for many years. I remember seeing it when I was a kid but did not know its significance.

It was rescued and is being stabilized and displayed in a temporary structure in Geneva IL.
